Here’s the Take It Home sheet from Sunday’s message “Planks & Specks” from Luke 6:36-42
As I was preparing for tomorrow’s sermon, I found myself reflecting back over a resource we mentioned a few months back, called “A Gospel Primer” by Milton Vincent (available to download from here) and found this quote.
Hope it encourages you today!
Milton Vincent: “God did not give us His gospel just so we could embrace it and be converted. Actually, He offers it to us every day as a gift that keeps on giving to us everything we need for life and godliness…I have found nothing more powerful and life transforming than the gospel…Over the course of time, preaching the gospel to myself every day has made more of a difference in my life than any other discipline I have ever practiced. I find myself sinning less, but just as importantly, I find myself recovering my footing more quickly after sinning, due to the immediate comfort found in the gospel. I have also found that when I am absorbed in the gospel, everything else I am supposed to be towards God and others seems to flow out of me more naturally and passionately. Doing right is never more easy than when one is breathing deeply the atmosphere of the gospel. I’m confident that you will find the same to be true in your life as well.”
Just wanted to make you aware of 2 new resources that will be coming our way soon! I know you can’t believe it, we are actually updating our resource table!!
The books are listed below, together with the blurb on the book from the Sovereign Grace store!
“Shopping for Time – How to Do It All and NOT Be Overwhelmed” by Carolyn Mahaney, Nicole Whitacre, Kristin Chesemore, and Janelle Bradshaw.
“We can accomplish everything God has ordained for us to do in this life. (Hint: It’s probably not half of what’s on your to-do list.) And we can do it in a peaceful, joyful manner and get sufficient rest besides.” —Shopping for Time
If, like many women, you’re wondering whether that’s possible, Carolyn Mahaney and her three daughters want to persuade you that it is. Based on biblical principles and drawing from their experience as wives and mothers, this book offers guidance for busy women—young or old, married or single. Wondering how to find out what God’s priorities are for you? Not sure how to get it all done? Let Carolyn, Nicole, Kristin, and Janelle point you to the path of joyful, humble planning and productivity.
As Carolyn and her daughters write, “This book is not an attempt at a Christian-coated time-management book. Rather, we want to provide encouragement and practical help for women to bring glory to the Savior through every season of life.”
You can read the introduction and chapter one from the book here and read a review at the Discerning Reader website.
Secondly…
“When Sinners Say “I Do” – Discovering the Power of the Gospel for Marriage” by Dave Harvey
“You married a sinner. So did your spouse. It’s a truth that can be easy to forget. But realizing the truth about our sin points us to the glory of God’s grace and power to change us. Only at the cross do sinners become holy, the angry become merciful, and the proud become humble.
Whether you are starting out in marriage or you just celebrated your 50th anniversary, you’ll find in Dave Harvey’s book a guide to building your marriage on the foundation of the gospel. As such it forms an excellent followup to Gary and Betsy Ricucci’s Love That Lasts: When Marriage Meets Grace.
As Dave writes, “Could it be that God already knows you are sinners, yet gives you everything you need to build a thriving marriage anyway?”
You can read a review here.
