Thinking about your holiday? I know I am – counting down the days…

We all like to make preparations for our holidays don’t we?

Planning what to take – Clothes? Sports equipment? Sun cream? Planning what we will do when we get there – Water parks? Tourist attractions? Shopping? Planning our budgets – For food? For spending? For tacky souvenirs that end up in the back of a wardrobe? Planning our reading – A magazine? A novel? Or one of the pile of recently recommended books that you’ve been meaning to get to for ages?

We so often think through all the practicalities (is you passport out of date?) but oftentimes neglect to think through the opportunities that holiday times provided to grow together as a family, and to grow together as a family in our relationship with God.

Husbands & fathers – now we have no excuses!!!

Over at the “Sovereign Grace Blog: CJ’s views from the cheap seats” CJ has taken time out to help us think through making the most of our family holidays together.

Read, digest and benefit from part 1, available here.

During our Sunday sermon series on Engaging the Holy Spirit I mentioned a couple of good resources that cover the topic. In case you didn’t manage to jot them down here they are:

showing-the-spirit-carson.jpg “Showing the Spirit” by D.A Carson

An in-depth and brilliant study of chapters 12-14 of Paul’s first epistle to the Corinthians, dealing with the critical issues at hand. More technical in nature (basically a commentary), but thorough and helpful.

beginners-guide-spiritual-gifts-storms.jpgThe Beginners Guide to Spiritual Gifts by Sam Storms

A very accessible look at the 9 gifts Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians 12:1-11. Each chapter takes one of the gifts and Sam Storms leads us into a brief study of each and its place in the local church today. A helpful beginners guide!

Both books provide rich study material for digging deeper into this topic and are highly recommended.

If you are looking for a book recommendation following Peter’s message on the Holy Spirit’s role in our Assurance, you should look no further than this:
